Picked fresh, sent when it's ripe

Hi. We're Garden Hero.

We're the folks behind Rooted, a free gardening newsletter. Garden Hero TV is a garden makeover show coming in 2027. Backed by the World Food Bank, we help gardeners grow food they trust and share their surplus.

Why now? Trust in store-bought food is slipping. Confidence in U.S. food safety fell from 70% to 62% between 2022 and 2024 (IFIC Food & Health Survey, 2024). Growing your own puts you back in charge, whether it's your first tomato or your fortieth season.

New to it? We'll help you start with confidence. Been at it for years? We'll help you grow more to share, use less water and make room for pollinators. Either way, the extra goes to neighbors who'll be glad to get it.

September flips a switch. The tomatoes keep coming, but somewhere in the back of your head a countdown just started: how many weeks until frost. Today we get specific about that number instead of guessing, retire a companion planting myth your garden club still swears by, and hand this week's zucchini glut to people who actually need it.

Quick hits

  • Know your real frost date. Texas alone spans four USDA zones, and last frost swings by six weeks between cities. Read the full breakdown
  • An $899 indoor garden was crowned the best of its kind, but "no green thumb required" only holds if you also pay $39 a month. Read the fine print
  • One Maryland farmer planted 44 rows of corn with no plan to sell it, only to give it away. Read where it went

Three minutes, then back to the dirt.

What's bugging your garden?

Pick a topic. Every post is written for your USDA zone and sourced to university extension pages.

How it works

  1. Subscribe. It's free.

One email field. No paid tier, no trial, no app to install.

  2. Grow by your zone.

Every guide covers zones 3 through 11, so the advice fits your frost date, not somebody else's.

  3. Drop the extra at a pantry.

When the zucchini wins, we point you to a pantry that wants it and tell you what they can actually take.

With Rooted

A garden that feeds your table, and the neighbors when it overflows.

Without it

Another season of generic advice, plants that die from fussing, and a zucchini bag on somebody's porch.

The extra goes to the pantry.

Garden Hero exists so food grown in a backyard ends up on a table, including tables that aren't yours. Fresh produce is what pantries most need and don't always get (Feeding America).

When your harvest outruns your kitchen, we'll point you to a pantry near you and tell you what it can take. Our pantry finder is on its way. Until then, Rooted points the way.
